Frankenmuth Credit Union board and staff have always seen the importance of giving back to the communities they serve. That's why we we started Frankenmuth Credit Union Foundation for Our Communities. Our Foundation, started in 2012, is making a big difference in communities all over Michigan by funding projects like: a fire safety educational bounce house, updating signs and trash receptacles in a local park, finishing off a community pavilion, and more. Go to our foundation page to learn more, get an application, and find dates when our foundation board will meet to review applications.
Our Staff Community Reinvestment Initiative - Hope Pocket
Frankenmuth Credit Union's staff is committed to giving back to the communities we serve. Each year FCU's staff donate hundreds of hours personally to different projects, festivals and events in our area. In addition to this, in 2010 FCU formed the Hope Pocket Committee which is a group of staff that develop and design giving-back projects. Some of the things the Hope Pocket committee has already done include Thanksgiving Dinners for families in need, volunteering at area soup kitchens in Bay, Saginaw and Genesee counties, raking up leaves for members that are no longer capable of doing it, the gutting and remodel of a house for a family in need, and more. Through the Hope Pocket, FCU staff also donate money from each of their paychecks to go to a fund. This fund in the past has done things like; buy dress shoes for a little boy whose mother had passed away and the family couldn't afford to buy for him, give clothes to a family that lost everything in a fire, buy glasses for a member who no longer could see good enough to drive but couldn't afford new glasses, and more.
Being financially smart isn't something we are born with but is something we need to be taught. So where can people go to to learn how to be better stewards of their finances? Frankenmuth Credit Union staff go through annual training session on how we can be better financial advocates for our members, FCU also features certified financial counselors on staff, has a partnership with Accel to provide custom one-on-one budgeting information, and has MoneyDesktop as part of our online banking service which is an online money management and budgeting software.
Free Tax Filing Assistance - VITA
Every year Frankenmuth Credit Union, in cooperation with the United Way, runs two VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites during tax season. One site is run during the week strictly by United Way Volunteers at our Saginaw Town & Country office on Erna Drive. The other site is run on Thursday evenings and Saturdays at our Frankenmuth office and manned by Frankenmuth Credit Union staff volunteers. The VITA program supplies free tax preparation for moderate-to-low income tax filers and makes it possible for them to receive their earned income tax credits.
Habitat For Humanity
FCU and Saginaw - Shiawasee Habitat for Humanity have an exciting partnership that is helping fix and upgrade housing in the area. Through our partnership, families have been able to get NIP (Neighborhood Impact Program) funds for repairs and rehabilitation. Those qualifying for the program have owned their home a minimum of 18 months, will stay in the home at least 5 years after the improvements are made and make less than $34,000 for a family of 4. The program runs each May—November and those interested should contact Habitat.
For many years, the staff at Frankenmuth Credit Union has sponsored their annual Hope Tree Auction. FCU staff donate items made or purchased. The items are then auctioned off by way of silent and live auction to FCU staff and board during our event. All proceeds from this go to adult foster care home residents and hospice patients the credit union sponsors at Christmas, along with supporting other organizations that are making a positive difference.
FCU has raised over $70,000 over the years for these very worthy groups.
From young to old, everyone loves a parade. That's why Frankenmuth Credit Union wanted to start being involved in our communities' parades as much as possible.
You can't miss our big purple piggy bank, that we affectionately call Kevin Bacon, rolling down a main street near you. If you happen to see us in the future, make sure to say "Hi" and tag a picture of our Kevin on Facebook because he is a camera hog.
At Frankenmuth Credit Union, we are proud to serve those who live, work, worship or were educated in the state of Michigan. We also support the schools and school districts in the communities we serve.
Now, it's your turn to show your spirit. Every time you purchase a box of one of our School Spirit checks, FCU will donate $2 to that school or district. Current participating schools are: Vassar HS, Reese HS, Frankenmuth HS, Birch Run HS, Millington HS, St. Lorenz - Frankenmuth, St. Pauls - Millington, St. Michaels - Richville, Trinity - Reese, Immanuel - Frankentrost, and St. Elizabeths - Reese.
FCUs school support doesn't stop with just our school check program. We also provide Spirit T-Shirts to many of the local school districts each year for them to hand out at games.
We also have a school branch located in Frankenmuth High School, Reese High School, Birch Run High School and Juniata Christian School where students and staff have access to their accounts at the school.
Our Local Educators Mini Grant Program gives teachers the opportunity to purchase items that are essential to classroom learning. Interested in more information? Contact us for more information on our Mini Educator Grant program.
FCU staff volunteer their time in the summer to the Frankenmuth Farmers Market. CU staff help the vendors set up their booths in the morning, and then, in the afternoon help pack everything up once the sale is done.
The Frankenmuth Farmers Market is located in beautiful Frankenmuth and features vendors from around the area that sell everything from Azaleas to Zucchini and everything in between. The market takes place every Saturday from April through October between 8am - 2pm and on Wednesday in the summer. Soon, the Frankenmuth Farmers Market will be building their own permanent structure on the north end of Frankenmuth which will allow for selling local goods year-round.
Frankenmuth Credit Union has been involved for years in County Fairs. FCU has supported the fairs in the past by purchasing animals at the 4-H livestock auction from young adults. We always wondered though how we could do more for all of our members. This is why we came up with our 4-H Livestock application grants. These grants are for youth, involved in 4-H and members of FCU, to help defray the costs of purchasing and raising their 4-H animals. Involved in, or have a child involved in the 4-H livestock auctions, complete a 4-H Livestock application. By filling out an application, it could be worth money to you.
"Got Blood? Give Some." Which is exactly what FCU staff, members, friends and family do each year at FCU's annual blood drive. Frankenmuth Credit Union has been hosting blood drives for over 17 years with Michigan Blood and this year was no different.
The FCU blood drive is always in January, which is national blood donors month, and has historically been on the Tuesday after Martin Luther King, Jr. Day continuing on through Wednesday.
On average, the Frankenmuth office drive has been able to draw between 80 - 100 pints of blood each year. All of the blood that Michigan Blood gets stays right here in the Mid-Michigan area to help save lives.
Special thanks to everyone who took the time to come in and GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE!
PRIDE of Saginaw's Friday Night Live concerts happen every Friday at Morley Plaza in downtown Saginaw from the middle of July to the middle of August. Frankenmuth Credit Union has participated as a sponsor to this "free to the community" event for several years. In addition to sponsoring the adult beverage area, FCU staff also donate personal time to work in the adult beverage area at the concerts. In 2010, Frankenmuth Credit Union and Schaefer & Bierlein worked together to purchase the Showmobile from the City of Saginaw.
Previously, PRIDE had used the Showmobile to do their summer concerts. When the City decided to sell the trailer on eBay, it put the concert series in jeopardy. Our two businesses worked together and purchased the trailer to donate to PRIDE for their future use. The concerts are a lot of fun, if you haven't experienced them yet, you don't know what you are missing. The PRIDE group is doing wonderful things for our area and downtown Saginaw.
